Description
Course Date: Thursday 22 June 2023
Location: The Amelia Scott Mount Pleasant Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells TN1 1AW
These courses are for absolute beginners and for people who’ve made a basket or two. Teenagers from the age of 12 are also able to take part.
Weaving with rattan is very light, easy and therapeutic, as you are using head, heart and hands, bringing body and mind back in sync. You’re focused and in a tranquil setting, allowing your brain to use work in a different way.
Is this something for me?
You will be weaving, using slender rattan wood and a few techniques which are easy to grasp. Making these lampshades is free-style and playful and is less methodical than weaving a basket, for instance.
Over the years, people with disabilities, or who were thought to be lesser abled were still able to weave a basket. Not quite sure about your abilities or whether your fingers will manage, then just get in touch and I will assess to see whether it’s for you.
Locations
I try to organise the workshops in rural locations, as then we have the full benefits of nature around us to fully reconnect and rewind. At the Amelia Scott we will be working on the patio, weather permitting. The building had a very recent make-over, fusing two iconic buildings into one with a newly built core structure and a breath of fresh air. The Residency Suite, where we will be working, was purpose built for craft courses.
Please contact me for a more tailored experience, should you wish to organise a private course, for instance, or if you have needs that may need to be considered.
Please note: Courses will only take place with 4 or more participants two weeks in advance of the course date.
What can I Expect?
- A relaxed time, immersing yourself in being creative with natural materials;
- Making a lampshade, using rattan and a number of basketry techniques to make your item rigid;
- Step-by-step, easy to follow guidance from start to finish;
- Learn ancient basketry techniques and explore other projects with the same use of techniques;
- Your amazing lampshade(s) is/are made from 100% sustainable materials, the ethical, eco-friendly way; and
- All willow, use of tools, teas, coffees and fruit are included. I advise people to bring a packed lunch, but there will also be plenty of time for you to grab something from the many delicatessen shops in the centre of Tunbridge Wells or in the Amelia café. There will be fruit for when we get peckish.
There is a maximum of eight and a minimum of five participants per course.
It’s a fantastic time to spend with friends, but also really refreshing to share with like-minded people you’ve not met before.
Basket weaving is very therapeutic, as you are using head, heart and hands, bringing body and mind back in sync. Working in a group allows you to share experiences, bounce off ideas, so it’s also a great way to build new friendships. Truly refreshing for both mind and spirit.
