Writing your speech, having your say in the arrangements of the funeral, thinking deeply about what your loved one would’ve wished it to be are opportunities for you to come to terms with your loss and are very important for the grieving process. Weaving your wreath with natural willow, being in the moment, weaving with your loved one in mind, is another of those very therapeutic things and a wonderful way to add your contribution to the ceremony. You will learn how to create the arrangement of flowers and what to think about, once it’s in situ.

This is for absolute beginners. Children as young as 12 can take part too. Groups are small – up to 6 participants – so you get all the attention you may need. Afternoon courses are £75, start at 14:00 and finish around 16:00.

About Marianne, your teacher

Marianne is a full-time basketmaker and willow grower with a workshop on the border between East Sussex and Kent. She has been weaving since 2006 and teaching basketry techniques on a professional level since 2018 and will teach you the ancient, professional basketry techniques at your own pace, while focusing on the mindful and therapeutic elements of weaving with natural materials.

What can I Expect?

  • A relaxed time, immersing yourself in being creative with natural materials in a tranquil setting;
  • You could choose to spend the half day with family or friends, reminiscing about the special moments you had with your loved one, allowing yourself time to heal.
  • A 35, 45 or 55cm wreath made out of different varieties of Sussex-grown basketry willow;
  • You will learn how to create the arrangement of flowers for your wreath and what to think about, once it’s in situ.;
  • The step-by-step, easy to follow guidance from the start of your base until the finished product;
  • You will learn ancient basketry techniques and explore other projects with the same use of techniques;
  • Find out about cultivation and preparation of willow and hedgerow materials;
  • Learn how to use tools provided and what to use if you don’t have those tools at home;
  • Your lovely item will be made from 100% locally grown sustainable materials, the ethical, eco-friendly way; and
  • All willow, use of tools (if you don’t like using your own), teas, coffees and fruit are included. I advise people to bring a packed lunch.

Is this for me?

Weaving with natural materials is good for the soul and very therapeutic, as you are using head, heart and hands, bringing body and mind back in sync. Working in a group allows you to share experiences, bounce off ideas, so it’s also a great way to build new friendships. Truly refreshing for both mind and spirit.

Over the years, people with disabilities, or who were thought to be lesser abled were still able to weave a basket. Not quite sure about your abilities, then just get in touch and I will assess to see whether it’s for you.

Locations

I try to organise the courses in creative and / or rural locations; on farms and in studios for instance. This way, we have the benefits of nature, and inspiration around us to fully reconnect and rewild.

Please contact me for a more tailored experience.

Groups are small with 6 participants per project.

Please note: A minimum of four delegates is required to run this course. Should bookings not reach the minimum number this course may be rescheduled. Please book your course a week-and-a-half before the course date to allow for the preparation to take place.
