Full Day Basketry Workshops

Basketry Workshops

My workshops are designed for both complete beginners and those with some previous weaving experience. Working in small groups, you’ll be introduced to the materials, techniques and quiet rhythm of traditional basketry in a relaxed and supportive setting.

Throughout the day, we’ll explore different forms, weaving structures and natural materials, with opportunities to look closely at finished baskets and discuss how traditional techniques can be adapted for contemporary use.

Workshops are welcoming, unhurried and thoughtfully paced — equally suited to friends attending together or individuals looking to spend a creative day with like-minded people.

What to Expect

During the workshop you will:

  • Learn traditional basketry techniques through guided, hands-on making;
  • Work with natural materials such as willow, rush, rattan or hedgerow materials, depending on the workshop;
  • Receive step-by-step tuition throughout the day in a calm and encouraging environment;
  • Gain an understanding of how basketry materials are grown, harvested and prepared;
  • Learn how to use a range of basketmaking tools, including practical alternatives for home use; and
  • Leave with a handmade piece of your own to take home.

Basketry is a wonderfully grounding process — an opportunity to slow down, work with your hands and spend time immersed in natural materials and creative making.

Materials & Refreshments

All materials and use of tools are included, along with teas, coffee, fruit and homemade cake throughout the day.

For venues without catering facilities, I recommend bringing a packed lunch. Where lunch is available through the venue, details will be provided in advance of the workshop.

Accessibility & Experience

Workshops are suitable for a wide range of abilities, including those who may have limited hand strength or mobility. Over the years I’ve worked with many participants who initially felt unsure whether basketry would be accessible to them.

If you would like to discuss your individual requirements before booking, please feel very welcome to get in touch. I’m always happy to explore ways of adapting the workshop experience where possible.

Locations

I aim to host workshops in peaceful rural settings — including smallholdings, studios and forest school spaces — allowing participants to fully enjoy the restorative qualities of working creatively with natural materials.

Group sizes are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of six participants, to ensure plenty of individual guidance throughout the day.

Should minimum booking numbers not be reached, participants will be contacted directly in advance of the workshop date.
