Basket weaving is much more than simply making a basket.
The process encourages us to work with our head, heart and hands together. It asks us to observe carefully, think practically, solve problems creatively and work rhythmically with natural materials.
Many people find weaving deeply absorbing. Hours can pass unnoticed as hands become familiar with the willow and attention settles on the task at hand. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and constant distraction, basketry offers a rare opportunity to slow down, focus and reconnect.
Working alongside others also creates space for conversation, shared learning and the simple pleasure of spending time with like-minded people. It is a wonderfully grounding experience that nourishes both mind and spirit.
Learn a Traditional Craft with Natural Materials
Spend a day immersed in the ancient craft of basket weaving, working with sustainably grown willow and learning techniques that have been passed down through generations of basketmakers.
These private workshops are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have woven before and would like to explore new forms and techniques. Together, we’ll create both a traditional woven dish and a more contemporary vessel, allowing you to experience different approaches to basketry and gain confidence working with natural materials.
The day combines careful guidance with opportunities to experiment and develop your own ideas. Whether you’re drawn to basketry through a love of craft, nature, sustainability or traditional skills, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the materials and techniques involved, as well as your own handmade pieces to take home.
Workshops are often held in peaceful rural settings where we can enjoy the connection between the craft and the landscape that provides its materials. However, private workshops can be arranged at a location that suits you.
Private full-day workshops from £600
Basket weaving workshops usually run from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Wreath-making and plant support workshops usually run from 10:00am to 4:30pm.
About Your Tutor
Marianne is a professional basketmaker and willow grower based on the border of East Sussex and Kent.
She has been weaving since 2006, beginning her journey with renowned basketmaker Alan Sage before continuing her studies with a number of respected makers, including Benjamin Nauleau. Since 2018, Marianne has taught basketry professionally, sharing both traditional techniques and an understanding of the natural materials that make basketry possible.
As a willow grower herself, Marianne brings a unique perspective to her teaching, helping participants understand not only how baskets are made, but where the materials come from and how they can be grown, harvested and prepared sustainably.
Her workshops are relaxed, informative and tailored to individual needs, allowing everyone to learn at their own pace.
What Can I Expect?
During the day you will:
- Learn traditional basketry techniques used by professional basketmakers
- Create a traditional woven dish and a contemporary vessel using different varieties of willow
- Receive clear, step-by-step guidance throughout the making process
- Explore both structured and more creative approaches to weaving
- Learn about willow cultivation, harvesting, preparation and storage
- Discover how other basketry and hedgerow materials can be used in weaving
- Gain confidence using basketry tools and learn practical alternatives for home use
- Take home your finished work and the skills to continue exploring the craft
All willow, use of tools, tea, coffee and fruit are included. Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch.
A maximum of seven participants ensures plenty of individual support throughout the day.

Over the years, Marianne has taught people from a wide range of backgrounds, abilities and age groups. Workshops are adapted to suit the individuals attending, ensuring everyone can participate comfortably and work at their own pace.
