Weaving Beyond the Basics: An Intermediate Willow Basketry Workshop

If you already have some experience with stake and strand basketry and are ready to expand your skills, this workshop offers the perfect next step into more refined and creative weaving techniques.

Spend a day immersed in traditional willow basketmaking in the peaceful countryside of Kent and East Sussex, learning techniques that bring greater structure, finesse and individuality to your work. In this small-group workshop, you will explore more advanced methods including scalloming, weaving with a Catalan base, fitching made easy, a variety of side weaves and several different basket borders.

Designed for those with some prior basketry experience, the workshop provides a relaxed and supportive environment in which to deepen your understanding of willow weaving while developing confidence in more complex forms and finishes.

A Slower, More Skilled Way of Making

Working with willow is both grounding and deeply rewarding. As your weaving develops, so too does your connection to rhythm, form and craftsmanship.

These workshops are intentionally small and unhurried, allowing space to concentrate fully on technique while enjoying the calm, restorative nature of working with natural materials by hand.

Participants often describe the experience as both creatively inspiring and deeply meditative — a rare opportunity to slow down, focus and learn in a meaningful way.

You will leave not only with new technical skills and woven samples or completed basket forms, but also with greater confidence in your own weaving practice and creative direction.

What You’ll Learn

During the workshop you will:

  • Learn how to create a traditional Catalan based basket;
  • Explore scalloming techniques to create stronger and more refined basket structures;
  • Discover fitching made simple and approachable;
  • Experiment with different side weaves and learn how they affect the character and strength of a basket;
  • Practise a variety of traditional basket borders and finishing techniques;
  • Develop a deeper understanding of structure, flow and form in willow basketry; and
  • Receive individual guidance and support throughout the day.

All materials, tools and refreshments are included.

Teas, coffee and seasonal fruit are provided throughout the workshop, and participants are invited to bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the countryside setting.

Meet Marianne

Marianne is a professional basketmaker and willow grower based on the Kent and East Sussex border. She has been weaving since 2006 and teaching basketry professionally since 2018.

Her work is rooted in traditional craftsmanship, sustainability and a deep appreciation for heritage weaving techniques. Marianne teaches with warmth, patience and clarity, helping students build confidence while encouraging their own creative expression through willow.
